If you are over 21 years of age, you have had a full driving license for more than three years and hold no motoring convictions, you can become a driving instructor. If you really enjoy driving and teaching others, even better! Here are the steps to becoming a driving instructor.
- Check you are eligible and fit the criteria I mentioned at the start of this article.
- Get a DBS check. This is compulsory as driving instructors have to work with people of all ages and backgrounds. It is important that they are safe when they are with you, a DBS certificate helps prove that you are.
- Get training. You don’t actually have to get training to take the ADI test, however it can definitely be beneficial to make sure you pass the first time.
- Take the ADI theory test. Just like the normal driving test, it will involve multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test. You will need to bring your full photo card driving license.
- Take the driving ability ADI test. This costs £111 which sounds like a lot, but once you are a driving instructor, you’ll quickly earn that amount back.
- Once you have all the certifications you need to be a driving instructor, you can either work for a driving school or become self-employed.
- Make sure your car has the necessary additional attachments such as extra mirrors and pedals for the passenger seat.
