We are often unaware of the many things that influence us when we shop. Shops use a variety of tactics to get our money, including the buy one, get one-free promotion, and placing chocolate at the checkout. But do we know the subtler ones? The stores want us to be happy, interested in certain products and return regularly. You may be surprised to learn that colour plays a part in this.

84.7% of consumers say that colour influences their shopping habits. Among the other factors are atmosphere, comfort and buzzwords.

The effects of different colours on Western buyers:

Red – This colour can be very energetic and increase the heart rate. It not only creates an impression of danger, but when it comes to retail a sense of urgency. This colour is used most often for sales. For advice from Sign Makers Exeter, go to exeter.nettl.com/signs/

Yellow – A colour which attracts attention. It is used often in window displays for attracting the attention of passers-by. This colour represents youth and optimism.

Blue – Blue is a colour we associate with trustworthiness, safety, and grounding. As such, it’s used by financial institutions and healthcare providers.

Black – A dark shade that shows sophistication and strength. It is used for luxury products because it looks slim and serious.

Green – Green is the most adaptable colour to our eyes and is therefore used to calm. It is often used in hospitals, doctors’ offices or other places that require a calm atmosphere. It also has a connection to wealth.

Purple – It is used mainly for anti-aging, beauty and baby products.

Orange – While orange is a warm and friendly colour in many settings, it can also be perceived as aggressive, which is why it’s often used as a call to action, such as buttons for buying, selling or subscribing.
