Now more than ever the need to embrace modern building techniques is being felt. It costs a lot to the environment to demolish and rebuild a space. It is easy to see where we have gone wrong. For example, the age of the Brutalist concrete construction seems to have passed by. So many of the post war buildings have been deemed unfit for purpose or generally so unliked as to be considered ugly that they have been removed. Now the focus is on using energy efficient green and aesthetically pleasing buildings that complement the landscape and townscape rather than seeming out of place and jarring. There is a move to complement the surroundings and almost blend in. This is very much at odds with the look of the 1980’s where we saw great block buildings going up like slabs. Look at the Shard and the Gherkin in London.  It’s an attempt at the unique rather than the formulaic that is required.
