Adding solar shading to an existing building can present different challenges than designing it from the start but it is by no means impossible to achieve with the right approach.

Check the Facade First

For a solid wall (such as brickwork or concrete) assess what weight the wall can bear. The load bearing points need to be confirmed by a structural engineer. Older buildings with refurbished cladding may require additional strengthening before the bracket fixing can take place.

Choose the Right Fixing Method

Surface mounted bracket systems are typically the preferred method of retrofit solar shading, as they avoid the major structural works typically associated with other types of solar shading. Through-bolting into a concrete structure or fixing to the mullions of a curtain wall are two typical methods of fixing for retrofit projects.

Pick the Fin Direction for Each Elevation

For a South elevation a horizontal fin is ideal to block high summer sun whilst allowing lower winter sun to penetrate. East and West facing walls have the sun travelling at a low angle across the face of the building and are therefore better handled with vertical blades.

Consider Adjustable Systems

These types of panels can be made adjustable, allowing for fine tuning of the shading performance after they have been installed to the desired level.

Check Planning and Building Regulations

External alterations to buildings have restricted permission under the current permitted development rules.
