Using Architectural Features to Regulate Temperature

Buildings that are designed to be livable have architectural features to regulate temperature. One of these features is thermal mass. Bulk materials have a long cooling and warming time. They can also help regulate temperature by banking night-time cool and releasing it in the morning. These features are essential for maintaining the ideal temperature of a building. You can use a variety of architectural designs to accommodate these needs. For example, white exteriors reflect heat and light, which lowers extreme temperatures.

Tall buildings should be divided into zones or storeys. Each zone would have its own temperature control system. The prolonged heat waves of summer have highlighted the importance of maintaining a comfortable temperature. In the UK, temperatures can reach the mid 30s making brick buildings almost unbearable. By using architectural features that help to regulate temperature, buildings can be livable and maintain a comfortable temperature. Another solution to controlling indoor temperature is to install air conditioning. This allows the interior to remain cool and can be controlled in zones to save energy. However, with energy prices on the rise, many will be looking for more efficient ways to keep buildings cool. Recently, countries have focused their attention on renewable energy. These developments could reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and minimise carbon emissions. However, these developments are still a long way off. As long as the technology is available, it is hoped that the benefits of architectural features to regulate temperature will be widely available and continue to be adopted, such as brise soleil.
