Escapologists are incredibly talented. They have managed to escape from almost everything, including a trunk submerged in water and a straitjacket that was locked. Here are the most talented escape artists in history:
Harry Houdini
Harry Houdini is probably the best-known and most respected escapologist of all time. He helped many modern entertainers create careers for themselves. Houdini’s techniques and tricks are still used by many modern-day escapologists, who add their own twist to them during their performances. The Chinese water torture chamber and the escape from the milk can are two of his most famous tricks. Houdini was handcuffed or chained, and even placed in a trunk before being submerged in the water for both of these tricks. Houdini nearly died in his first attempt to do his not famous buried-alive trick. He went on, however, to perform it two more times before his 1926 death.
Dorothy Dietrich
Dietrich, also known as “First Lady of Magic”, has helped pave the way for women to enter the magic world. She is the most well-known female escape artist. Her first escape saw her remove a straightjacket while suspended upside-down from a rope which had been lit on fire and without a safety netting below her. She managed to perform a feat that Houdini had not been able to master – she caught a .22 shot fired from a firearm in a metal bowl that she held between her teeth.
