The Spaces Between Rooms: Why Transitional Areas Matter

In thinking about a home, most people consider the different rooms within that home. The kitchen, the living room, the bedroom. However, some of the most important areas of the home are the areas that connect those rooms together.

Often, the hallways, landings, entrances, corridors and connecting areas of a home are overlooked during the design process. These areas, however, can have an important impact upon the feel of a home and the movement of its occupants. Another use for hallways is as a means of creating a sense of arrival within the home. The design of the hallway allows people to leave the outside world behind as they enter the main areas of the home. The inclusion of features like landings and doorways allows for both daylight to enter the home and for people to visualise the different areas of the home without feeling completely open to the other spaces of the home.

Another function of transitional spaces is to control the movement of people within a home, to provide privacy to certain areas of the home and to create the desired atmosphere. For example, a kitchen may be situated near a dining area but a transitional space between the two rooms prevents people in the dining area from viewing into a bedroom located adjacent to the dining area.

Even the smallest of changes to the flooring, windows, furniture or even the ceiling height can make a difference to the space and give it a sense of purpose.

Good residential architecture is not just about creating beautiful rooms. It must also consider the spaces between those rooms.
