What do catering assistants do?

Roger Theder July 14, 2026 Food and Drink Leave a Comment

Catering assistants work in restaurants, schools, hospitals, hotels, event venues, or within catering companies to help to support chefs and the other catering staff. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the size and type of the kitchen, but they are generally involved in food prep, cleaning and serving. Although the role is often considered an entry-level position, catering assistants can then go on to progress to other careers.

Preparing Food and Ingredients

One of the main responsibilities of a catering assistant is helping with food prep such as washing and chopping ingredients, preparing meals and assisting chefs with whatever they need. They may also help organise ingredients and make sure that food is stored properly.

Keeping The Kitchen Clean

Keeping the kitchen clean and everything hygienic is an important part of a catering assistant’s job. They are often responsible for washing dishes, cleaning work surfaces, emptying bins, and following all the food hygiene procedures. In busy commercial kitchens, keeping good ventilation is also important, and systems such as commercial kitchen extraction, like /www.targetcatering.co.uk/kitchen-extraction/commercial-kitchen-extraction, can help to remove heat, steam, and cooking fumes from the kitchen.

Stock Management and Organisation

Another important duty is helping manage kitchen supplies. Catering assistants may check on the deliveries, store ingredients, rotate stock, and report when these items need to be replaced. Good organisation helps to prevent waste and makes sure the kitchen has everything it needs.

Following Health and Safety Procedures

Catering assistants must follow really strict hygiene and safety rules to prevent food contamination and keep everything safe for those with food allergies.
