So depending on where you’re spending your vacation, check out the area to see if it’s any good. It’s no sense in staying in a hotel you’re afraid to leave out of. You should also make sure that the hotel is close to the city, airport and/or attractions, so you don’t have to pay too much for transportation.

Check Your Passport
If you’ve had your passport for a while, it’s a good idea to check the expiration date. There have been cases where students end up trapped in a country because they stayed past the expiration date on their passport. Typically, a country won’t allow you to enter if you have gone six months past the expiration date, so unless your backpacking for a year, this may not be of concern to you.

Consider Buying Insurance
Even if it’s just a weekend trip, you should heavily consider buying travel insurance. This should be done for your car or rental car and health. Anything can happen while you’re hiking, swimming or even shopping. Hospital bills is the last thing you want to have to worry about during your vacation. Make sure that the health insurance you purchase offer emergency evacuation coverage, so you can be transported back home to obtain medical care.

Make sure you keep enough cash on you to pay for public transportation in the event of an emergency.
