1. Caring for a palm tree outdoors

As with other garden plants, palm trees tend to adapt better outdoors than indoors, as long as they are planted in suitable land with light and other appropriate conditions. These are the aspects that you must take into account to care for a palm tree outdoors:

Light

It is true that palm trees are tropical and subtropical plants, so they need a lot of light and warm climates to grow healthily. Although there are some types of palm trees that can live indoors, the vast majority enjoy the sun, so the first thing you should do is know the type of light and the temperature of the place where you want to place it. Thus, you can acquire a type of palm tree according to the light that you can provide.

Irrigation

You may think that, because it is a palm tree, it does not need frequent watering, but the truth is that it does need water, especially at the beginning of its growth. When you establish the palm tree on the ground, only one watering per week will be necessary, even less, and it is also very important that the ground has good drainage. And it is that, like the excess of irrigation, the puddles are fatal for this plant.

Substratum

As we just mentioned, the ideal soil for palm trees should have good drainage. It is true that there are some types of palm trees, such as those that generate coconuts, that can adapt to saline and humid soils, but even so, the soil must drain the water correctly, especially in the upper layers, because that is where it is they find the roots. As a general rule, the best soils for the vast majority of palm trees are sandy, well porous, and loose, but this can vary depending on the type of palm tree.

General maintenance

An indoor and outdoor palm tree is one of the easiest plants to maintain, but that does not mean that we can forget it. If you grow it in a tropical area, just looking at it will be enough for it to grow in perfect condition, but if you live in a temperate area, you will have to offer it a few pampering.

In short, make sure to grow your palm tree in a fairly sunny and warm location throughout the year. It is also essential that you choose a palm tree that adapts to the climate of your area, and remember not to prune it, let the leaves dry on the same plant until they sprout with a simple pull.

2. How to care for a palm tree indoors

One of the favorite plants to decorate interiors is the palm tree, as they not only serve to add a touch of green to our spaces but also to add height and elegance to rooms.

However, most palm trees need a lot of light, so despite being a houseplant, you will have to find the ideal place for it. Here are some tips and tricks for caring for an indoor palm tree:

Light

Without the necessary light, no plant is able to survive, and palm trees are no exception. An indoor and outdoor palm tree should receive a good amount of sunlight, even indirectly. Therefore, the idea is to place it near a window, a glass door, or in a patio or terrace where the light enters strong but in a diffused way.

Irrigation

It is true that indoors, irrigations should be more sporadic than outdoors, as the sun will not evaporate excess water from the ground. Therefore, before watering it, you must wait until the ground is dry. To check it, you can put a finger in the ground; If you notice that it is still damp, wait a few more days before watering it again. When you water, also make sure that all the substrate is moistened and remove any excess water that comes out of the holes for drainage. Remember that puddles are not good, especially indoors, as they can cause fungus and the roots to rot.

Substratum

As with palm trees outdoors, the substrate for indoor ones should be loose and well-drained. Although there are palm trees that prefer humid soils, this does not mean that they can survive with the roots that are waterlogged. You can use the same substrate that is used to grow cacti and succulents, but if you have questions, ask at the establishment where you buy your palm tree.

General maintenancepalm trees in pots

As with all indoor plants, the fundamental thing will be the care you give it. Inside the house, they are not exposed to the inclemency of the environment, so they depend mainly on you.

Remember that, to care for a palm tree indoors, you must avoid excesses. If you water it a lot, the roots will rot, on the other hand, it will end up drying out if you water it little. Therefore, in addition to the tips and tricks for taking care of a palm tree that we have offered you, always keep a middle ground.

Finally, do not place your indoor and outdoor palm tree in areas that are too cold, or near air conditioning, heating, or in spaces where the environment is very dry.
