Today we’re going to take a look at cleaning your bicycle derailleur and chain and how to maximize your chain, derailer, and gear life.
I’m gonna first use a regular paper towel without any there will be 40 and I’m going to show you how little you actually take off When you try to clean it.
First, hold the paper as such and then run the chain through a little bit then caught the paper towel, but as you can see, not too much taken off.
So, I’m going to flip it over or fold it over, put some WD 40 on it and just a nice amount and it’s sweat through and I’m going to do it this way this time Slowly rotating Jane and try to make it easy.
You can see the difference and just to say again, WD 40 is not oil and It also removes oil and It’s a rust penetrant.
So, when you put this on your chain, it drives out all the oil and it takes away all the protection. So, I’m going to do this a little while and it’s going to, as you can see and it’s also very dirty again.
Here you have an amazing guideline on how to clean a bike chain perfectly.
After you finished cleaning it with the WB 40 rag, just do another and clean pass with a dry towel. So, it takes off all the WD 40 and the rest of the junk that’s on the chain and checks it again.
As you can see, there’s still quite a lot left and one last clean, make it getting better.
Now I’m using, what weather of oil. So, it’s a lot thicker compared to dry weather oil, but since and I get a lot of rain and all that kind of stuff in damp weather anyway it’s okay.
It’s not ideal, but I don’t like I’m moving my chain up every two days basically and put a few drops correctly.
That I rotate the gears that I put a few drops and I’m going to rotate the gears and the idea is that you have just enough oil on your chain, that it doesn’t make any noise.
It runs well and you don’t hear any grinding or squeaking or anything like that and the main reason why not to put too much oil on it is that oil attracts dirt and grit and all that kind of stuff.
So, if you put too much, it gathers up all the dust and that actually creates the abrasion, which wears out the gears of the chain a lot faster.
If you did put too much oil on it, you can actually wipe it off and it also varies slightly, but I’m just doing this as a just show up.
