- Empathy – To understand someone is to show genuine empathy. You may not be able to know exactly what they are going through, or experiencing, but you can empathise that you are there for them and support them. This is opposed to sympathy which can be little more than just saying “oh dear”.
- A sense of humour. You need to be able to laugh. If you can make others feel the same, then you have a natural gift. You’re going to be faced with some challenging people and challenging circumstances. To laugh is to decompress.

- Not judging. Not being judgemental is a difficult task. As humans, we make decisions about people, usually based on very little information at the time.
- An interest in people, you have to find people interesting as this job is totally based on their care.
- Be an honest listener. If you are dealing with the elderly, all that they may want you to really do is listen to them recount their tales and life. You may even learn something.
