The Dangers of Hype
See that video? That’s the new teaser from Bungie. You know, the one they were going to show at E3 until Microsoft nixed that plan. The one we’ve all been wondering and guessing about for months now. Now that it’s finally here it seems kind of…. small.
As it turns out, the “new project” that Bungie was so excited to tell us about is an expansion of some sort for Halo 3. The above video shows a New Mombasa with some sort of pods falling from the sky. Now, I love me some Halo, and this expansion is definitely of interest to me, however, the hype didn’t match the reveal. It all started during E3 when bungie.net started displaying a countdown. That countdown was ended with a letter from the high ups at Bungie apologizing for the lack of an actual reveal, but it was too late - people were already worked up, and speculation began. Guesses started flying - “a new game!!”, “a new map pack!!”, “an expansion!!”, “a downloadable version of Halo 3’s multiplayer!!”, and so on. The speculation only continued when, prior to the release of TU2, the achievements that the title update would bring got leaked. They mentioned (and still do I suppose) new skulls, which are never found on multiplayer maps. Finally, last night, a new countdown appeared on bungie.net, culminating in an unclear one minute and three second teaser for a halo expansion. No concrete info - just a hint to the fact that the project exists. So, since July, they’ve been teasing a teaser. I, for one, am underwhelmed. I expected that, after all this time, we’d see some sort of concrete information, however, the build up only lead to more build up. The hype train ran off it’s track and spun out of control. What threw it off the track? A tiny pebble.
