No editing and a 20 minute + music Monday means this is the longest podcast you’ll never listen to! We’ve been away for a while and this show is sure to make you wonder why you ever listened in the first place…
We yell about Square Enix, Left For Dead 2 and Nintendo. We also wrap up our thoughts on E3, which of course involves discussing Peter Molyneux’s obsession with young boys.

When looking back at old video game soundtracks it is often important to put into context what else was happening at the time when the game was released. For this week when looking at Lufia and the Fortress of Doom’s contemporaries we can see that Final Fantasy IV had already been out in the United States for over 2 years, and Secret of Mana had been out for 2 months previous to it’s release. Both of these games had fantastic soundtracks, especially when looking at the type and variety of music and sounds that had been created for Secret of Mana.

Limited by a minimal number of audio channels made the development of coherent and refined soundtracks all that more difficult for early composers and sound designers. The creativity that was often used to work around hardware specifications helped these early soundtracks have an identity. Although some of the more ambitious soundtracks suffered because of this, an endearing quality has often become associated with the music that was created with particular soundchips in older consoles.

One of my favorite games on the NES is Final Fantasy. To this day I can still play the game through savoring each moment. Most recently I have been playing the 2003 re-release for the PS1 which may diminish the nostalgia factor but definitely not enjoyment. Which got me to thinking, there are many more powerful, better looking, insanely more complex games available to me. Yet, out of all the games out their and all the ones I own, I’ve never played through a game as many times as Final Fantasy. For that matter, in my top five most played games of all time the only one made recently is Katamari Damacy for the PS2.

For a game franchise that’s nearly twenty years old, the Final Fantasy fan base continues to grow with the sort of fervor usually reserved for science fiction television shows or Joss Whedon projects. Recently, two projects sprung from the fandom,…
