Random Thoughts: Is Supervilliany Covered by Your Insurance?

Monday, August 21st, 2006

It’s time for my readers to get to know a little more about me. I’m a bit of an insomniac. It’s 12:33 AM right now, and I don’t see myself getting to sleep for quite some time. It’s times like this when my mind wanders to questions normal people wouldn’t ask….. Like this one: Is supervilliany covered by your insurance?

Wonder Twin Powers combine!! Form of: unnesessary legal action!

It seems that in an act of legal paranoia, Marvel and DC comics at some point got a joint trademark on the word Superhero. How are they using this trademark you might ask? To defend their intellectual property against plagerists out to make a quick buck? No. They are using their legal muscle to strong arm an indie comic company called Geek Punk Comics. Geek punk’s flagship comic up until recently was known as Super-hero Happy Hour, but was recently changed to simply Hero Happy Hour after Geek Punk recieved a letter which, long story short, threatened legal action unless the name was changed. Of course, a smaller company like Geek Punk would have little chance of defending itself in a legal battle against corporate giants such as Marvel and DC, so the title was changed.
We here at What the Geek would like to offer a couple of alternatives to the word superhero for anyone else interested in starting their own comic, and here they are

1. Souperhero - his only enemy is the can opener
2. Supernero - able to fiddle at the speed of light while Rome burns
3. Superzero - He’s nondivisible!

In closing I’d like to say this to Marvel and DC: Don’t sue me for using the word superhero in this article…. I don’t have any money for you to take…. you’d be wasting your time and money.
