Hugo Chávez Has Done it Again
January 18th, 2010“Sony’s PlayStation video game console is “poison” and leads children down the capitalist “road to hell,” is the latest signature worthy quotation coming from Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, on his weekly radio-TV show “Alo Presidente”.
Since 2008 Chávez seems to blame all from alcoholism, smoking and drugs to violence, gun sales and wars on the capitalist western video game and toy industry. In October Venezuela outlawed the sale of “bellicose” (violent) games and video games, under a punishment of up to five years imprisonment.
In his show Chávez instructed Venezuelan manufacturers to make “educational games,” and suggested designing “little indigenous dolls” to sell instead of western dolls like Barbie.
It looks like Chávez really got paranoid and butthurt by 2008’s “Mercenaries 2: World In Flames”, a game that takes place in Venezuela, and which very quickly got banned in Venezuela, with the Venezuelan government accusing the U.S. government of trying to drum up public American support for a real-life invasion with the purpose of overthrowing Hugo Chávez.
One can do nothing but chuckle… and wonder if Jack Thompson and Hugo Chávez would make good friends, they seem like the perfect match.
