We wash the bed sheets weekly, the mattress once a month, and even the pillowcase, but do we pay the same attention to the pillow itself? Most people believe that the pillow should not be washed because the humidity remains inside it and favors the appearance of mites. But the reality is that just the opposite happens. If we do not wash our pillows at least twice a year, they become the ideal nest for bacteria, fungi, and the aforementioned mites. We spend between 6 and 8 hours breathing on them every day and it is not surprising that the dirt accumulates. If you want to know how to wash a pillow, in this article we give you the keys according to the type of filling have your pillow.

Wash a latex pillow

Before washing your latex pillow, check the washing label and check that it can be washed. Some latex pillows are made with hypoallergenic latex, which prevents the appearance of bacteria and mites inside, which makes it unnecessary to wash them. For latex pillows that can be washed, it is more advisable to do it by hand , unless the washing label specifies the use of a washing machine.

Take a container, fill it with warm water and add a little mild detergent, especially for delicate garments. Mix everything well and moisten a clean rag in the solution. Squeeze it out well to remove excess water and clean the latex pillow with it. Do it gently and make circular movements to remove the stains well. The most important thing in washing latex pillows is drying. Dry it well with clean towels to remove as much moisture as possible, then place it in a dry place, out of direct sunlight, and, most importantly, flat.

Wash memory foam pillow

It is very important to differentiate between molded memory foam pillows and breathable memory foam pillows since the former cannot be put in the washing machine and the latter can. To find out what type of memory foam your pillow has, check the label. To wash your molded viscoelastic pillow, place warm water and a little neutral soap or a mild detergent in a container. Take a clean cloth, moisten it in the mixture, squeeze it well to remove excess liquids, and wash the viscoelastic pillow using circular movements.

Then, dry it well with clean towels and leave it in a flat place, free of moisture, so that it dries well. Or, if you have a vacuum cleaner with a soft bristle brush, dry it very gently and very carefully.

Don’t forget to check the memory foam pillow’s washing label to make sure it’s safe to wash.

Wash a feather or synthetic fiber pillow

Both feather and synthetic fiber pillows can be washed in the washing machine without any problem, as long as you do not insert more than two. Put the program for delicate clothes, warm water, and use a mild liquid detergent. Do not use the spin mode because it can damage the pillows. So that your feather pillows do not lose their volume and remain just as fluffy, put two tennis balls wrapped in thick socks in the washing machine, and tie them well so that the socks do not come off.

To dry them, you can do it in the dryer or outdoors. If you use the dryer, set the tumble cycle to cold for down pillows and the minimum heat tumble cycle for synthetic ones. In both cases, also insert two tennis balls. And if you let them dry outside, place them in a flat place and try to move them during the drying process.

Tips

  • If you wash your latex pillow in the washing machine, remember to put the program for delicate garments.
  • The most important thing is to dry the pillow well so as not to leave moisture inside.
  • Do not forget to look at the washing label of your pillow in any case.
