Dead Space: In Space, No One Can Hear You Dismember Your Enemies

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Dead Space has been pushed as a survival horror game with an engaging plot, and unique combat system. Some of those things are true, some of them aren’t. The total package, while enjoyable, isn’t exactly what I was expecting when I sat down to review this game.

Is Fable 2 The Future Of Gaming?

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Whenever the topic of the future of gaming comes up, I immediately begin blathering on about immersion, and how as time goes on, games only get more immersive. Normally, I’m referring to top notch visuals, high quality surround sound, and deep, engaging plots. Fable 2 has shown me that immersion comes in more flavors than I had previously thought.

Age Of Booty Docks In Your Port, Steals Your Rum

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

For those of you who would prefer to read this review entirely in pirate speak, you may do so here.

Age of Booty (formerly Plunder) is a pirate themed RTS developed by Certain Affinity, and published by Capcom. From the start, this game has shown a lot of promise. Capcom aimed to provide some high quality RTS action in a guppy-sized downloadable package, and they delivered.

The Xbox Live Divide

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

With the recent downtime of Xbox Live on Monday in preparation of the long awaited Fall Dashboard Update many thoughts started going through my head leading to the ultimate question: Is the direction that Microsoft is taking one that will ultimately help or hurt the Xbox brand? With the classic conundrum of fixing something that isn’t broke Microsoft really has to be careful to not push away their bread and butter for a demographic that might not even be there. While I am not saying that the new dashboard enhancements and introduction of avatars won’t bring in people who previously held off on a purchase, Microsoft is running the chance of alienating the current user base.

The Dangers of Hype

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

See that video? That’s the new teaser from Bungie. You know, the one they were going to show at E3 until Microsoft nixed that plan. The one we’ve all been wondering and guessing about for months now. Now that it’s finally here it seems kind of…. small.

The Great Big Microtransaction: Mega Man 9 Price Gouging

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

When Mega Man 9 made it’s triumphant 8-bit leap onto the virtual console on Monday, the online instruction manual lept onto the VC with it. That manual contained some information about future plans for some rather controversial DLC. Just about every video game released in the past decade has had multiple difficulty settings. Mega Man 9 will have them too….. (more…)

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Breaks Leash Laws, Gets Fined

Friday, September 19th, 2008

When I first heard about this game, I was filled with excitement at the prospect of playing a powerful Sith apprentice. Then the Star Wars nerd in me got a good smack in the face from my common sense. See, my common sense remembers the long track record of terrible to mediocre Star Wars games that have come out in my lifetime, and as such, assumed that this game would be no better or different from the rest. I spent the past two days doing almost nothing other than playing Star Wars: TFU, and letting my common sense and my inner Star Wars nerd duke it out over what to think of the game. You’ll find the results below.

Peter Molyneux Is Playing A Very Different Game Of Fable 2 Than The Rest Of Us

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Back in July, right after E3 I recall listening to an episode of 1UP Yours in which Garnett Lee described a backstage encounter with Peter Molyneux. During that encounter, Molyneux showed Garnett some actual Fable 2 gameplay. After wandering about for a bit causing trouble, Molyneux led his wandering minstrel under a bridge and, to Garnett’s surprise, killed him dead. See, Garnett, along with the rest of us, was under the impression that the minstrel was a reward for doing good deeds. Molyneux explained that the minstrel was quite annoying, and he wanted to see how long gamers would put up with him before killing him.

I don’t think I ever laughed as hard as I did when I heard that story - that is until I hit up IGN this morning.

Too Good? Too Bad? Too Human.

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Dennis Dyack has had a lot to say about Too Human over the past couple of years. He spoke of a game with rich RPG elements, solid action, and interesting plot.  Dyack promised a game unlike any we’ve played before. It was a lofty promise, and it earned him a lot of hateful attacks criticism.  So what was the final product really like? Was it the golden piece of innovation promised by Dyack, or the brown piece of excrement described by the forum trolls? (more…)

Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

I don’t know which captivated my attention first, the trailer, or the tongue-firmly-in-cheek advertisements using negative reviews from comment trolls such as “this game sucks and anyone who likes it sucks. penny arcade sucks and is as funny as something that’s not funny at all,” but I found something absolutely captivating in the marketing for Penny Arcade’s On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One, and found myself compelled to give it a try.
