PSA: Calm Down - Resident Evil 5 DLC NOT On The Disc!

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

The internet is ablaze today with rumors that the new Resident Evil 5 DLC is already on the disc, and that all you’re downloading is an unlock code. Turns out that, despite some larger news outlets fanning the flames, this may not be the case after all.

OnLive And The Future Of Gaming

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

There have been quite a few interesting, and exciting announcements to come out of this week’s GDC, but none so mind-blowing as the announcement of OnLive. For those that haven’t heard about it yet, OnLive is a service that will allow gamers to stream current, high profile video games to just about any PC or Mac, as well as a tiny microconsole that you can connect to a TV. If you’ve got the bandwidth, then games will stream down to you in 1280×720 resolution at 60 fps. This could have a drastic impact on the face of the gaming industry over the course of the coming years.

CGOTW: A Fading Melody

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

A Fading Melody is, at it’s core, a basic 2D platformer, but what makes it special is the presentation. You play as Melody, a young woman in a coma trapped inside her own mind. The screen gradually fades to black, and you have to destroy the monstersplaguing Melody’s subconscious mind in order to prevent the darkness from engulfing everything. With simple, but enjoyable art, an interesting story, and solid gameplay, A Fading Melody is an artfully done platformer worth checking out.

CGOTW: Hexothermic

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Hexothermic is an easy to learn, but hard to master puzzle game. The concept is simple:, you have to clear all the atoms on the screen, and earn as many points along the way as possible. To clear an atom, you have to make it explode by firing electrons into it. Red atoms will explode with just one electron, yellow atoms take two, green take three, blue take four, and purple take five. When an atom explodes, it shoots electrons off into six different directions, dictated by the lines connecting that atom to those around it.

Is E74 The New Red Ring Of Death?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

In today’s failing economy, my high-powered two figure income as a blogger just isn’t enough, so I fix various electronics on the side. I have a lot of experience with the Xbox 360, and I can say with confidence that something stinks about the official MS response to Joystiq’s poll on the topic.

CGOTW: ZP2K9

Friday, March 6th, 2009

If you’re a fan of the Super Smash Bros series, or even if you just liked Small Arms, ZP2K9 is for you. With four game types, 13 awesome weapons, and a wide assortment of maps, this game has a lot to offer…. and all of those offerings can be enjoyed online. That’s right, you’re not just stuck playing against your friends and family, you can take the fight online over Xbox Live. There are only a handful of community games that offer that ability, and most of them don’t have a lot of players online at any given time. ZP2K9 seems to have a fairly large group of online players, and as such, I never had trouble hopping into a match.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope Travels The Universe In Search Of Mediocrity

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

The Earth has been ravaged by world war 3. Humanity is forced to live underground, due to the high contamination levels found on the surface of the planet. Tenacious creatures that we are, mankind looks to the stars in search of a new home. It’s a somber, heavy concept, and one that’s delivered in a frank and straight forward way by the introduction cinematic found in Star Ocean: The Last Hope. It’s also a story that greatly appealed to the sci-fi nerd in me. As that cinematic drew to a close, I prepared myself for a tale of humanity’s triumph over adversity.

Noby Noby Boy…… WTF?!?!?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

In case it wasn’t blatantly obvious from the above screen shot, Noby Noby Boy comes from the mind of Keita Takahashi, creator of the Katamari Damacy series, and it is every bit as strange as it’s predecessor. The concept is simple: stretch Boy as far as you can, eating everything you can (including cats, houses, and people) along the way. With a fairly simple gameplay mechanic and charming graphics, Noby Noby Boy appears to be Namco Bandai’s attempt at recapturing the magic felt by gamers everywhere the first time they played Katamari Damacy. The results of that attempt are somewhat mixed.

CGOTW: 2win Ghost

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Two little ghost lovers have lost each other on their way to heaven, and it’s your job to reunite them! Alright, the concept is a little hokey, but the gameplay is pretty awesome. You control two ghosts, one pink, and one blue. The left analog stick controls the pink one, and the right analog stick controls the blue one. The object of the game is to get them both to meet at the exit for each level, collecting as many hearts as you can along the way. It sounds a lot easier than it is. Forcing your brain to properly steer two ghosts at the same time, while avoiding the various obstacles, such as skulls of doom and the grim reaper, can be extremely challenging. I often found myself trying the same level multiple times before getting it right, but once I did, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment.

Street Fighter IV: Indestructible!

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I remember a time long ago when I heard the oh-so exciting news that my local arcade acquired a Street fighter III cabinet. This was back in 1997, long before that black void took the place once occupied by my soul. I rushed to the arcade, full of hope, and excited at the prospect of a bigger, better Street Fighter experience. Hands shaking with anticipation, I dropped a quarter in the machine, and prepared myself for a new challenge. Alex? Dudley? Yang? Who to pick? As it turned out, they all sucked. Every last one of them. After a very short time with the game, my shoulders slumped, and my head hung low as I made my way back over to the ever faithful Super Street Fighter II Turbo cabinet I had known and loved for so long. The new game was an epic disappointment.I guess after telling you that story, it’s probably pretty obvious that I was skeptical about a new Street Fighter game. I’m happy to report that Street Fighter IV has hit my skepticism with a devastating hodoken.
