BFTP: X-COM: UFO Defense Baby!
September 8th, 2009For this BFTP I will tip all you gaming noobs off on one of the greatest PC games of all time; X-COM: UFO Defense, or X-COM: Enemy Unknown as it was later called. This turn-based strategy masterpiece was first released for MS-DOS in 1993. It was also available for Amiga and later even the first Playstation, where the load times were horrendous (we are talking 5+ minutes here).
The story in X-COM starts in 1998 when representatives of the world’s most powerful nations meet in Geneva to discuss the issue of increased UFO sightings and alien abductions. The solution is to form the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit (X-COM), which the player controls throughout the game.
X-COM has the perfect mix of turn-based action and strategy as you build bases, intercept UFOs, discover and attack alien bases, research technology, train your units and try your best to ensure that no countries cut their funding to the X-COM project. I don’t know how many times I’ve played through the game over the years but I’ve shot down my fair share of UFOs.
The X-Com series saw several sequels but it’s really the original game that was and still is pure awesome. If you don’t believe me you should know that X-COM was voted #1 in IGNs “”Top 25 PC Games of All Time” in 2007 and 2009.
The original game, all the sequels, or everything in one fat package can be purchased for a few bucks via Steam!
