While not the complete family tree, this diagram will give you a good idea of how insane and large the history of development studios really is.

Outstanding work, congratulations. And I dunno if I missed it, by I don’t see Nintendo in that chart.

Epic? Steam? Digital Extremes? … just off the top of my head.

hey all, just a couple notes about the chart:

    1. it’s not complete. For example, companies like Nintendo weren’t included because they never really merged with / split from any other companies. They’ve made some acquisitions over the years - and we’re hoping to address those type of issues in a future revision of the chart.

    2. Consider this one version 1.0. We’re going to make changes, and additions to the chart as time goes on, and re-release it periodically. We’re hoping to replace the names w/ company logos, as well as flesh the chart out a bit with some of the devs we didn’t add this time around. Consider it a work in progress.

Ace job, but missing a few big ones… Valve, Bethesda, Epic, Bungie

  7. Moltdar Says:

Totally innacurate concerning Ubisoft. The company has almost just as many studios as EA such as Montreal, Quebec, Paris, Montpellier, Casablanca, Shangai, Singapour and MANY others and other subdivisions such as Redstorm and special effect studios.

    Awesome chart, first I’ve seen.
    Some corrections…

    - “Firaxis” not “Fireaxis”

    - “Microprose” is absent from the chart. That studio is what raised people that eventually started “Breakaway Games” and “Firaxis Games”.

    - “Big Huge Games” started from devs who were formally at “Firaxis Games”

    - Also absent: “Day 1 Studios”, “Breakaway Games”, “Big Huge Games”

Glad you liked it, and thanks for the suggestions, like I said above, we’re definitely not done with this. It’s going to be an ongoing project, and hopefully, one day, it’ll be a useful resource for information about the history of the video game industry.

Nice effort, but needs more Japanese developers: Sega, SNK, Capcom, Konami, SCE, Taito, Square-Enix, Toaplan etc..

I’m looking forward to an expanded version :)

It’s funny that you mention the Japanese developers - Eric and I discussed that briefly when we sat down to record the next podcast today, and we definitely want to do something with that, but it may wind up being a separate chart due to the complexity of the Japanese dev community. Rest assured, it’s definitely something we’ve taken under consideration for the future.

Great chart. Here is another link in the tree:

Microsoft Game Studios (merged with) Digital Anvil (started by members of) Origin Systems

At least put Origin on this here chart :)

Great graph! This will be huge when you’re done :)
You even got most of our (DICE’s) acquired studios except for Trauma Studios that became DICE New York for about a year until it was closed. And then became Kaos Studios and owned by THQ.

I see you have DMA designs, and Rockstar, but not the studio formed By Dave Jones afterwards called Realtimeworlds, which released Crackdown on xb360 and now working on that online game http://www.apb.com

  14. James Says:

Yes, as mentioned above there is a lot missing - including all the studios across Australia, but it is a very interesting 1st version

    Really great chart guys.

A connection i didn’t see was that Interplay once owned Shiny Entertainment.

    Looking forward to updates!

  16. Mark Says:

Which i just realized makes The Collective and Shiny Entertainment sort of cousins. Weird.

  17. Spiderbait Says:

It would be great if you could have arrows on all or at least a few more of the lines than just the Atari inc./Activision one. It’s kind of hard at times to know who broke off from who and such. And shouldn’t there be a Activision Blizzard instead of the red line going from Vivendi to Activision? I noticed that you did that with other mergers.

  18. Mickiscoole Says:

    Some studios missing:
Epic, iD, Looking Glass, Ion Storm, Lucasarts, doublefine…

  19. Bubb Says:

It’s good, but there’s a lot of history missing here… e.g. many Guildford games studios such as Bullfrog - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullfrog_Productions

    But it’s a good start…
