Win A Hand-painted Custom Xbox 360 Faceplate! [UPDATE]

[Update] To clear up some confusion, the examples above are faceplates that have already been painted and have been sold. The contest is for a custom faceplate that hasn’t been created yet. I will paint (pretty much) anything the winner decides he or she would like on a faceplate. The winner’s faceplate will be one of a kind (I never paint the same design twice). Sorry for any confusion. ^_^’
Rules and details after the jump.
First place winner will receive a hand-painted faceplate, painted JUST for them.
Second place winner will receive this Fight Club faceplate, painted by our own Sarah Tomesky:

• You MUST include a valid email address to be eligible for the contest. We will email the winners on Jan 15, and post the results.
• Spam comments and trackbacks will not be considered.
• The comment must be relevant to each post be considered. So that means no comments like, “I like cheese.” Also, excessively short comments will not be considered, such as “Awesome.” Or “That was cool.”
• Obviously, comments made by What The Geek contributors are not eligible.
• Comments made after 12:00 am EST on Jan 15, 2007 will not be considered.
• The faceplate cannot be a design I’ve painted previously. I reserve the right to refuse any design/idea. (But I’m pretty easy going)

Excellent designs! I wish I had more than a 2nd grade artistic bone in my body. A horizontal faceplate featuring Gears of War would be too freakin’ cool.
Nice contest — thanks.

Thanks! Yeah, me and Sarah both have been talking about doing some Gears faceplates… which would most likely end up on Mike’s Xbox and ebay respectively.

Hey, do you have pics of your faceplate wall? I think its so kick ass that faceplates are actually considered artwork and not just something to stick on your console.
By the way, the winner gets to pick the design on the faceplace… I wasn’t clear on that in the first place… but all those faceplates are long gone.

Anyhow i was creating a stencil of the logo and font of http://www.tribalwar.com (my home forums for 5+ years now)out of tape. well it always runs a little or gets under the tape and makes it look really messed up
ive sanded my faceplate so many times now that the sharp edges (like by the poer button) are completely rounded :P. it still looks ok if i can ever get it painted correctly.
so any suggestions for a noob faceplate painter?

I’m really glad you’ve taken the initiative to do all this, I’m impressed. You get some good deep colors, I imagine it’s acrylic, how long does it take the faceplates to dry with your process?

December 16th, 2006 at 5:45 am
This is why I love the option to change your 360’s faceplate, it gives artists a new way to show their creativity! I imagine the shape of a faceplate makes it hard to come up with a suitable design.

This might be a dumb question but did you put primer on it after you sanded it? That would be my first guess as to why your paint would run. (And if you can, use a primer meant for plastic.)
Anyway, I think soon we’ll add a tutorial on faceplates.

Wow. This artwork is amazing. I have no artistic talent whatsoever, and can pretty much only draw hands, heh.
If I win, I’ll probably ask for some sort of design where Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, and Altair (Assassin’s Creed) are in it together.
That would be awesome, especially since my 360 needs a good faceplate and I haven’t been able to find one thats great for me.

i did primer it and i should have worded it a bit better. its not like a run from spraying too much spray paint in spot so to speak its more like a airbrush look but out of the line of the logo. i wish i took a pic of it but maybe ill give it another shot and see if it does it again and ill take pics.
on another note i seen that geometry wars faceplate a long time ago that cool to know who made it. BTW i loved that game and i have all 200 points. still to this day i think my survive 1 million achievement is my proudest

Travace,
The only other piece of advice I had is intead of using tape, maybe you can try adhesive vellum. You can get it at craft stores. I’ve never tried it but thats the stuff they use to decal mirrors… the only thing is, I wonder if it would pull up your paint job… I’m really not sure what to tell you.
Anyway, I use acrylic paint on mine… maybe you would have better luck with a brush than spraypaint.
Good luck. ^_^

The faceplates you have already designed are amazing. I look forward to more of your faceplates going up on eBay like the previous ones. I know I’ll be bidding next time now that I know about it!

So this competition is worldwide or US only?
Now what would I want to be painted to my faceplate should I win? Hmm hmm… Maybe “The Scream” by Edvard Munch. Which brings up the question do you paint only your own work or would you paint that for example?

samp,
It’s worldwide… in fact, I think most of my faceplates end up in other countries… lol.
And I would paint pretty much anything.

Worldwide? I’m in. There is not much worldwide contests in this world
Although Fight Club faceplate is not so good. I hardly recognized Pitt’s character :). But a Lego faceplate is really something!!

Awesome faceplates! Loving the Lego Star Wars faceplate the best. However, when you pain the faceplate do you cover the turn on button to like the ring changes color meaning you paint blue over the light?

Kevin O,
I do paint over the ring of light.. I haven’t found a solid method to protect it.. I just paint over the whole button, which still works, you just can’t see the ring anymore. We’ve been playing around with some ideas to keep the light from getting painted, but it’s hard enough to remove the tape from the sensor, which is much bigger.

Those are quite amazing works of art, the Assassins Creed ones really caught my eye and the Dead Rising one on your site. I’m actually trying to get some of my friends to make some for me from different games and movies. I bought the Nykon make your own face plate software and and faceplate pack thinger. Gonna draw and paint on that one since there’s not an abundance of white faceplates in any store.
Some face plates that may look nice would be
Sonic/Shadow, something Final Fantasy, Megaman X, Gundam, Matrix not the code but the people, Selene from Underworld, Resident Evil’s Leon Kenedy, maybe even Jack Skellington, would say Spawn but your already working on one, but Green Goblin, Venom and Spider-Man would add a nice touch.
Anyways goodluck to everyone on getting a faceplate

MightyDriden,
Actually, they don’t have to be white… I use silver (or anything I can find). You have to put a primer down on the faceplate first so the paint will stick to it anyway.

This is some spectacular work! Kinda makes you wish 360 visual modding scene was bigger so more aspiring artists would get their artwork visible.
It would be a great honor to win one of your custom made faceplates.

Very impressive designs. Your painting skills are far more advanced than my potato print faceplates (oh the shame, why will nobody buy them). I have to say if I won this competition I would be tempted to have something not game related. Possibly have something movie or music related. If it was movie related it would have to be Donnie Darko themed I could imagine you doing a truly awesome design based on the visuals of that film. If I was going music related I would probably ask for the album design cover of a Nitin Sawhney album either Beyond Skin or Human they are quite basic but very cool you should check them out.

Hmm… This seems like a neat opportunity (and as always, I hope I win). The hard part, if I do win, would be choosing the design! I would like something Roger Dean-esque. I dunno. There are so many choices! You are a great artist, and I am curious to which method you are painting from. It looks to be brushed painted… correct me if I am wrong…

The custom faceplates are great looking. Kudos for your talent and skill and producing these fine pieces of art on the 360 faceplate. I think the contest is great and for my 2 cents, would like to see a BioShock faceplate as well. Keep up the good work, I enjoyed looking at all your creations.

hey jenny just a idea and what ive been doing for the ring of light on mine.
if you look on the back there is 4 tabs that hold the entire center ring and tha clear plastic on the faceplate. I was surprised to see how easly i could pop them off. I wedged a small screw driver under where the tabs are and carefully twisted till they poped loose. this jsut made things a lot easier for me to paint the rest of the faceplate without painting the circle of light part.
You would still have to carefully hand paint the center piece with a brush or something but for someone with skills i think it would be easier off the faceplate to paint.
when done just use a tiny bit of glue and slide over the posts and good as new
